Homemade Laundry Soap

So it seems everyone out there has a homemade laundry soap recipe these days so I’m going to add mine right along with them! This recipe is one I read out of the Rural AR magazine but I changed it up a little.

The recipe:

1 cup Baking Soda
1 cup Borax
1 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
1 Bar Fels Naptha Soap

The recipe is extremely simple. First you need to grate the soap into a large pot filled with water over med low heat. It should melt and look something like the picture shown below.

When your soap is all melted, you will need a five gallon bucket filled half way with hot water. You will then add all the other ingredients. Add baking soda, washing soda and borax and mix until all dissolved. Next, you’ll add the pot of soapy water to your bucket.

Stir this all together and fill the bucket to just below the top. You may notice some thickening already. Totally normal. Your all done for now! Let this mix set for a few hours or overnight and it will gel. Mine has only been sitting for about 3 hours….it will gel more overnight.

I like to mix mine after its gelled and pour into old laundry soap containers or just use from the bucket. I use about a cup per load.

I’ve also read about other people who use Zote Soap, lye soap, Ivory, or Kirks Castile. However I’ve only tried Zote. It worked well but I prefer the smell of Fels Naptha.

I’ve been really happy with the results from this soap so far and I’ve been using it for about a year now. The only thing that I miss is the smell of my old soap. But then again we don’t use soap for the way it smells, do we?? :)
